The vampire clan heads were here. All of them. Even the crazed teenager from New York.

They all stood in a line, closest to the stage, with the people from my clan standing behind them. Keir stood to the left of the throne, Gillard to the right. . . and I was all by myself at the end of the aisle as everyone stared at me.

Well. . . Emery was by my side, much to her displeasure. For once I was glad that I had someone by me. I needed something to pull from. But instead of pulling from our resentment toward each other, it was the crowd that pulled my attention. Something in the way they watched me, in the way they whispered excitedly to their neighbors.

That something was what allowed me to square my shoulders and walk down the aisle as if I actually was the ruler of this clan. I found surprising strength in the people I passed. The ones who looked at me with something akin to awe.

True to her words, I caught Nat in the crowd at the far side. I almost missed her due to the shifting bodies as my stare glided over them. She sent me a smile that caused my chest to warm. I didn’t expect my own lips to pull at the sides, but they did.

There are people here to support me.

Each and every one of the faces in the crowd was here to see a new leader take over the title as clan head. It brought me a strange comfort to know that they came here to see me. A once-bloodthirsty hunter who was forced to act as the Order’s shadow.

Just like Emery said. . .

Not a single one forgot about me. All while I was running and trying to live a life other than the one I was about to run into, they still remembered my place here.

When I reached the end of the aisle, I stopped to look at the clan heads. They all stood in a straight line, their eye locked onto me. Xin was the only one to smile and wave at me. Ian gave me a nod, but the others didn’t budge.

I sent them a smile.

A slow, sadistic smile spread across Victor’s face.

I turned to the stage, and the four steps up to the throne felt like a hundred.

My nerves were on fire, and my heart was pounding as fast as it could in my chest. Everyone’s eyes were on me. It became worse when Emery stopped at the bottom of the stairs, and I was forced to go the rest of the way alone.

Keir was there waiting for me and made a show of helping Gillard fit me with the bloodred cape.

The weight of it held the entire clan behind me. It held their hopes, their lives, their future.

It took my breath away. This was something that I’d overlooked.

I thought this was a stupid show of power, but it was so much more.

I was helped into the throne, and Gillard and Keir stood in front of me.
